Best AI Image Generator for Indian Culture? Pongal Festival Poster Test – Part 1

Case Study of Ideogram AI Model

Have you ever wondered which AI model works best for your Instagram or Facebook posts, especially when the content needs to reflect India’s vibrant festivals and traditions?

As I recently discovered, not all AI models for Indian marketing are created equal, especially when it comes to generating authentic India-themed visuals for social media campaigns. During the Pongal festival celebration in South India, I experimented with multiple AI image generators—and the results were fascinatingly different.

Why India-Themed AI Content Needs Special Attention

Creating AI-generated posters for Indian festivals is not as straight forward as writing a generic text prompt. Elements like regional dress codes, cultural symbols, and local visual language can make or break how authentic your poster looks to an Indian audience.

When I used the same descriptive prompt across different models, each generated drastically different results — from character inconsistencies to missing cultural icons that are crucial for festival marketing in India.

How Ideogram AI Image Generator Performs for Indian Festival Poster Design

To begin, I used Ideogram V3, one of the newer AI image models known for text-to-image precision among global AI marketing tools. The model did recognize the theme — an Indian harvest festival — and rendered South Indian-style characters with traditional outfits and festive backdrops that would work reasonably well for Instagram posts in India.

The prompt is simple, but elaborate to ensure that it is unmistakable

“ A wide-angle, expansive photorealistic 8K cinematic landscape image, with a 16:9 aspect ratio, captures a joyous South Indian family of four-mother in silk saree, father in dhoti, 10yo girl, 4yo boy in ethnic wear-celebrating Thai Pongal on an inviting, well-lit open verandah of a traditional home with wooden pillars, terracotta flooring, whitewashed walls; they encircle a gleaming, overflowing clay Pongal pot on a rustic stove, surrounded by an intricate Kolam, banana leaf with tropical fruits, betel leaves, coconut, a lit Kuthu Vilakku, and sugarcane stalks. Soft, warm, natural golden hour light, volumetric effects, illuminates frothy rice steam and their grateful, loving expressions, while vibrant yellow, orange, white marigold and jasmine garlands adorn the background, all rendered with highly detailed, sharp focus, rich textures, evoking abundant, spiritual warmth “

At first glance, the generated images seemed almost perfect for a Pongal celebration post. However, a closer look revealed several interesting flaws — let’s go through them.

Observations from Ideogram V3 Output

  1. Character Consistency

The prompt clearly requested four characters — a 10-year-old girl, a 3-year-old boy, and a couple. Most generated images missed this structure: sometimes replacing the girl with older teenagers, or even omitting the mother figure entirely.

  2. Cultural Detailing

The sugarcane stalk, a crucial symbol of Pongal festivities in South India, was missing from most images, despite being explicitly mentioned. This is similar to omitting pumpkins from Halloween posters in the US and shows a gap in cultural understanding within AI models.

  3. Object Recognition

Although the prompt mentioned a clay pot, Ideogram’s outputs alternated between brass, silver, and clay—showing a lack of consistency in object rendering and labelling.

  4. Realism Issues

Like many AI image generation models, Ideogram V3 still struggles with anatomy and realism. Fingers were fused or misshapen, and in one output, the little boy wore a girl’s outfit, which breaks visual credibility.

  5. Instruction Adherence

Traditional Pongal elements like Kolam (rangoli) and Kuthu Vilakku (sacred lamp) were missing, even though they were specified in the prompt. For brands, this kind of instruction miss can directly affect campaign relevance in India.

  6. Overall Setting & Mood

Despite these issues, the mood, color palette, and background were strongly rooted in South Indian culture — with a cheerful, festive atmosphere that captured the spirit of Pongal. This makes Ideogram V3 usable for top-of-funnel social creatives for Indian audiences, with some manual curation.

Verdict: Can Ideogram Be Used for Indian Festival Posters?

Ideogram V3 performs decently when generating broad India-themed visuals, but it currently struggles with fine cultural details, strict character structures, and instruction accuracy.

For creators, brands, and marketers targeting Indian audiences — especially during regional festivals like Pongal, Diwali, or Onam — choosing the right AI image generator for Indian campaigns and refining prompts with specific objects, regional cues, and relationships between characters can make a major difference to performance and authenticity.
